Aston Villa secured an impressive yet crucial victory at home to Man City on Sunday.
Unai Emery‘s side had a very slow start to the campaign, but their fortunes have changed significantly over the last few weeks.
After Aston Villa’s 1-0 victory against Man City, the Villans have now won six of their last seven in all competitions and have gone unbeaten in their last six Premier League games.
Several players emerged from the clash with praise, but Alan Shearer was particularly impressed with one player, and the stats show exactly why.
Two Aston Villa stars named in Premier League Team of the Week
After such an impressive win against a side often referred to as the best in the world, praise is always going to come the way of those who were influential in Aston Villa‘s triumph.
Via the Premier League site, Shearer has named both Matty Cash and Amadou Onana in his Team of the Week, and it will come as no surprise.
Cash scored a remarkable goal for Aston Villa to secure all three points, while Onana was dominant in the middle of the park against some elite opposition.

- Shearer on Cash: “Scored a goal that any forward would be proud of! Showed excellent composure to shift the ball onto his left foot before rifling it into the bottom corner.”
- Shearer on Onana: “Absolutely bossed the midfield, constantly shutting down Man City’s attacks and helping his side to play their way out of trouble in an impressive victory at Villa Park.”
Cash certainly deserves attention for his display, but Onana was on another level.

Just how good was Amadou Onana vs ManCity?
In short, incredible.
Whether it was his on-the-ball work or his desire off of it, Onana was simply at the heart of everything Aston Villa achieved against Pep Guardiola’s side, and his stats were stunning.
Via FotMob, the Belgian completed a remarkable 98 per cent of his 43 attempted passes, which equates to just one misplaced pass.
- 42 completed passes
- 11 defensive contributions
- Four passes into the final third
- Six duels won
- Four blocks made
- Three tackles won
All four of his attempted long balls reached their desired target, with 58 touches in total throughout the clash.
Defensively, Onana won six of his seven ground duels and completed four blocks and three tackles in the process.
If he can keep up this level of performance, Villa will keep moving forward without a shadow of a doubt.
