Chelsea started last season with Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana as their centre back partnership, and all went well with them in charge. In December Fofana got injured, and while he’s now back, Colwill is out for the season.
Maresca admits selection issues have hurt Chelsea at the back
The pair have ended up barely playing together after that first period, and Chelsea suffered with endless changes at the back.
Enzo Maresca was asked about his defensive issues in the press conference today and replied that it was better when you pick the same pair because “they know the combination, they can go together.”
“In this moment we are trying to rotate, and for sure we will try to get better,” he added, claiming that it was all down to injury and rotation that he had lost that stability in his back line.
“Consistency is always better in any aspect, for players, for the team, for anyone,” he answered when asked whether he would rather than been picking the same pair regularly.
Doesn’t that just sum it up? The problem with this Chelsea team is that they don’t have any consistency in performance. A big reason for that is that they don’t have any consistency in selection, mainly thanks to injuries.
If we had had Colwill and Fofana together beyond those first few months of last season, just imagine where we could be by now.
In other news…
Another major talking point from the presser was Joao Pedro. The striker has been struggling for form, but Enzo Maresca defended by saying that we shouldn’t be expecting 20 goals a season from him.
Chelsea are expected to make major changes for the game tomorrow, with Joao Pedro one of the most likely to miss out while he tries to recover from his persistent injury problems.
