Obi on target again as Man United U21s earn first National League Cup victory at Rochdale

Manchester United U21s recorded their first victory in this season’s National League Cup on Tuesday evening, winning 2-0 at Rochdale.

Chido Obi, who also netted in the EFL Trophy’s defeat at Barnsley last week, gave United the lead in the 11th minute with a one-time finish after the hosts lost possession.

The Danish striker’s early goal set up the tone for a first half dominated by United.

James Scanlon saw an effort blocked by Liam Hogan after he had done brilliantly to beat his marker.

Bendito Mantato then got a taste of the action, controlling a long diagonal pass before delivering a dangerous cross into the area. It was headed away, but only as far as Diego Leon, who blazed his shot over the bar.

Mantato registered United’s last attempt of the first half, cutting onto his left foot before firing a shot which was saved by goalkeeper Tom Myles.

Will Murdock in the United goal was called into action just after the interval before the young Reds continued their search for the second goal.

Jayce Fitzgerald had Man United’s first attempt in the second half, rifling a shot from outside the penalty area over the crossbar.

Myles made saves to prevent Obi and James Overy, who trained with the first team three times last week, from adding to United’s advantage.

Rochdale missed a great chance to level the scores late on when Levi Amantchi shot well over, neglecting Ian Henderson, who was in a good position to score.

Deep into stoppage time, Scanlon sealed the victory for Man United, placing his shot into the bottom corner.
