John Obi Mikel slams two “awful” Chelsea players, claims Blues can’t win the league with them

John Obi Mikel has slammed Chelsea for their defending against Sunderland and claimed the Blues can’t win the league with their current centre backs.

The Blues lost 2-1 to Sunderland on Saturday despite taking an early lead through Alejandro Garnacho, but from that point onwards struggled to create anything.

Chelsea conceded two really poor goals, and you will struggle to see worse defending all season for Sunderland’s winning goal.

The loss of Levi Colwill to an ACL injury before the start of the season was a major blow, and despite public pleas for a new centre back Enzo Maresca wasn’t granted his wish.

In Colwill’s absence the Italian has struggled to find a settled partnership, and has often rotated his centre back pairing from game to game.

Not signing a centre back in the summer isn’t looking a good decision given Chelsea’s struggles, and Mikel slammed the defence following the defeat to Sunderland.

“The way we conceded the last goal was just absolutely awful defending, awful defending,” he told The Obi One Podcast.

“And you know, I mentioned it so many times, we can’t win. We just don’t have good enough defenders. We don’t have good enough defenders.

“The defenders that we have right now, the centre-backs that we have right now, we can’t win the Premier League with those centre-backs. We can’t win the Premier League.”

Levi Colwill on schedule with recovery

There’s nothing Chelsea can do right now in regards to their centre backs, and it will be interesting to see if the Blues look to do anything in January.

Colwill is reportedly looking to play again this season, and is believed to be on schedule with his recovery, but Chelsea shouldn’t be thinking about him this season.

Maresca really needs to decide on a pairing and stick with it, because this constant rotating in a key area of the pitch is really unsettling and could cause more problems throughout the season.
