Chelsea have held discussions this month about the possibility of signing Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano.
The Blues tried to sign Dean Huijsen early in the summer, but he went to Real Madrid, whilst their only defensive addition was Jorrel Hato.
Chelsea lost Levi Colwill to an ACL injury before the start of the season, but didn’t sign a new centre back despite public pleas from Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea rate Dayot Upamecano highly
Chelsea’s decision not to sign a new centre back isn’t looking good given the poor defending which has plagued their start to the season.
Centre backs have made a number of poor errors which have led to goals and cost the Blues points, with Chelsea poor defensively for both goals against Sunderland.
Whether Chelsea address the centre back situation in January remains to be seen, but journalist Graeme Bailey has confirmed Upamecano is on their radar.
“We really have a fascinating summer looming, given some of potential big name free agents that might be available, and especially in the centre-half market,” he told TBR Football.
“In England we are thinking and talking about Marc Guehi, but in Europe the name many are talking about is French star Dayot Upamecano, who has really been looking the part at Bayern Munich under Vincent Kompany.
“Speaking to sources at a couple of Premier League clubs, they actually believe Upamecano is more likely to stay than leave, but I can tell you Bayern are really worried that Upamecano will have offers presented to him in early 2026 if an agreement with Bayern is not reached.
“And Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City are all very much in the mix for him, they all rate him highly.”
France international out of contract
Chelsea have previously been linked with Upamecano, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and could represent a very good market opportunity for the Blues.
The Frenchmen has been a key figure for Bayern, with the German giants making a brilliant start to the season, and has made 12 appearances in all competitions.
Chelsea will certainly face competition from other clubs, and it will be interesting to see how the race for Upamecano unfolds.
