Paul Merson has been on Sky Sports today talking about Chelsea, and he’s taken a big swing at the club and their sporting directors for building a squad that’s not as good as some would have you think.
Merson hits out at disappointing squad construction
“The likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Josh Acheampong have done well, but they are all young players… Chelsea need to bring in an experienced defender to try and help the young players they have progress further,” the former Arsenal defender explained.
“Then there’s the goalkeeper. Robert Sanchez is a good shot-stopper but I think he’s always got a mistake in him.
“In midfield, they’ve got one of the best in Moises Caicedo but up front, I think the decision to let Nicolas Jackson leave is coming back to bite Chelsea a bit. Marc Guiu wasn’t up to the task against Sunderland.
“To only touch the ball nine or 10 times when you are playing for a dominant team, that’s not good enough. Joao Pedro is also not training much as he manages an injury. It leaves Chelsea short, and I think it shows that squad is not as great as everyone makes out.”
It’s an opinion which most Blues fans would agree with. Since the start of this project we’ve said that more experience would help the young players improve, but still the average age gets younger every year.
In other news…
Merson also thinks that tonight’s game will be “crucial” for Enzo Maresca, who has had a slow start in the league and needs to keep competing in cups to add to his CV.
Maresca also took the chance in his pre-match press conference to moan about how other teams were switching to a back 5 to face Chelsea. We wonder what Wolves will do tonight…
