Paul Merson has written a very strong opinion article for Sky Sports today and he’s got so much of this bang on.
Merson is a Chelsea fan so he speaks with passion, as a supporter as well as a pundit and a former player who was very good in his day.

The former Arsenal star has been speaking off the back of Chelsea’s 4-3 win at Wolves in The Carabao Cup fourth round last night, a game that Enzo Maresca’s side ended up making very difficult for themselves after wasting a 3-0 lead at half time and almost allowing Wolves to get something.
Chelsea needed a screamer from nowhere from Jamie Gittens in order to have enough goals to win the game in the end, but it could have easily been a different story.
And that right there folks, is the story of Chelsea under Enzo Maresca and under this ownership – massively inconsistent and very inexperienced across the board.
Merson on Chelsea
Merson said:
“Chelsea are a young team which brings inconsistency. They are a cup team.
“Inconsistent teams do well in cups. They can get hot and produce on any given day in a one-off game, but they struggle over the course of a league season. They won’t be a threat in the league over a 38-game season.
“That’s where Chelsea are. They have won cups and can win a cup competition this year, but you won’t be winning league titles with a young team like that.
“At the moment, that is the project. Buying young players is the way they have gone, but that doesn’t win league titles.
“To a certain extent, the project has worked but longer term, do Chelsea want to win the Premier League?
“Now, it’s like a rollercoaster.
“One minute they can be great but then the next minute they aren’t great. It’s always going to be a bit up and down without experienced heads in the team.
“Only time will tell with how the project develops.
“Who will they buy in the next transfer window and in the summer? Will they continue to buy 21 and 22-year-olds? Or will they go for a couple of older players with Premier League experience?
“It comes down to what the owners want, whether they want to win cups or bring the title to Stamford Bridge.”
