Enzo Maresca has been told to bring Alejandro Garnacho “back down to earth” and that the Argentine is “full of himself.”
Garnacho joined Chelsea for £40m from Manchester United in the summer, and has had a mixed start to life at Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old is competing with Jamie Gittens for a place on the left wing, and has made seven appearances in all competitions so far this season.
Alejandro Garnacho “full of himself”
Garnacho scored his first goal against Sunderland, but like many of Chelsea’s youngsters has struggled to find a consistent level of performance.
The Argentina international was left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup tie against Wolves, and it’ll be interesting to see if he starts against Tottenham on Saturday.
Maresca has insisted he’s happy with Garnacho and his performances so far this season, but former World Cup winner Oscar Ruggeri was scathing in his criticism of the ex-United star.
“He’s no better than anyone else, you’re a football player, enjoy it, but you shouldn’t be so full of yourself,” he told ESPN.
“It’s pointless because you miss out on so much. Someone has to bring him down to earth.”
Garnacho currently isn’t being selected for the national side, and Ruggeri revealed what Garnacho needs to do to get back in contention.
“They’re not calling him up to the national team,” he added.
“If he comes back down to earth like he was, Argentina will call him up again because he’s phenomenal on the pitch.”
Estevao and Jamie Gittens impressing
The competition for places on the wings is fierce and right now Garnacho needs to up his level of performance to get back in contention.
Estevao has really impressed this season, with fans wanting the teenager to start every game, whilst Gittens has improved over the past few games.
Pedro Neto is arguably Chelsea’s first choice winger, but it’s a long season and Garnacho will get opportunities he just needs to make the most of them.
