Most criticised Chelsea player cements good form with superb showing – but still must be replaced

Moises Caicedo was the clear man of the match in Chelsea’s win over Tottenham yesterday, but who else did themselves a favour with their showing?

Without doubt Robert Sanchez had a great game. He really nullified Tottenham’s set piece and long throw threat by being totally dominant in the air. It’s his strong point and he really played to it by coming and claiming everything.

At the long throws in particular, Chelsea tried a new tactic of leaving three men forward. This forced Spurs to leave three men back, meaning a total of six players fewer in the box. This clears the way for Sanchez, and he took advantage.

Since being told to boot more of his kicks long by the manager he’s under much less pressure, making fewer mistakes and looking more confident. If only Maresca had come up with this bright idea a year before, when we were all saying it was the way forward.

The Spaniard has had a much better run of late with fewer mistakes, and while there was never really any chance the shaky Filip Jorgensen was going to take his place, it does make us a little more positive about our prospects this season.

Don’t get us wrong – we still want an upgrade on Sanchez as soon as possible. But this hopefully means he won’t be as much of a problem for the team until a better option arrives.

In other news…

Moises Caicedo isn’t just a beast on the pitch – he’s also a really disarmingly humble and gentle fella off it, and his comments after his man of the match performance proved that once again.

Caicedo was the key to Chelsea’s press, and as various pundits said yesterday, we haven’t seen any pressing intensity like it for some time at Chelsea.
