“I know how to handle it” – Chelsea star not bothered by nasty nickname

Estevao has been a sensation since he was a kid, but despite that we have all been very careful to not let ourselves get carried away in expecting too much from him.

Back in Brazil, he got the nasty nickname of “Cuiaba man,” because he apparently would only score against the lesser teams. Imagine criticising a 17 year old for not scoring in big enough games?

In any case, he’s quickly removed that label at Chelsea – his most significant goal came against Liverpool, and he’s already got his first Champions League goal. The winger was never bothered by the label anyway:

“I wasn’t even worried about that because I’m 18 years old. Nobody is 100% ready at 18. I thank God very much that sometimes things aren’t the way I wanted them to be, the way people wanted them to be in Brazil, so that they are happening here today,” Estevao said in an interview with ESPN in Brazil.

“I knew how to handle it calmly, my family has always been by my side, that’s what matters most. It doesn’t matter if I lose a game, if I win a game, I know I can count on my family and that’s the most important thing. Being able to help Chelsea, help in a derby, make the fans proud, is what makes me happiest,” he added.

In other news…

Liam Delap messed up his return to action last midweek – but should get another chance on Wednesday when the Blues head to Azerbaijan to take on Qarabag.

Estevao is another star we expect to get game time on Wednesday night – in fact, it will be very interesting to see how he links up with Delap. Both can expect significant minutes in the first team, both as subs and starters, in the rest of this season, so it will be really interesting to see if they can develop some chemistry in these midweek games.
