Predicted XI: Enzo Maresca faces difficult questions as Chelsea look to avoid Champions League playoff

PL News Wednesday 5 November 2025 - 12:59

Chelsea take on Qarabag in the Champions League tonight, and it’s a tricky one to predict in terms of lineup.

The Blues have a great chance to make it 3 wins in 3, and if they drop a single point today they will be kicking themselves as it will make a two game playoff after the league phase so much more likely.

Manage Enzo Maresca has to balance resting players now with getting a break at that point.

Maresca draws for the B team – with stars on the bench

To that end we think he still changes things pretty heavily, but with big guns on the bench. In goal Filip Jorgensen has looked so, so shaky, but will probably be risked.

Reece James needs to be rested so Malo Gusto will start, with Josh Acheampong and Tosin Adarabioyo in the middle. Jorrel Hato is ready to go on the left.

In midfield, we will likely see Romeo Lavia get a rare start, likely alongside Andrey Santos. Facundo Buonanotte likely plays just ahead of them in a role we’ve seen him take up in a number of cup games this season.

In attack, Liam Delap should be ready to start and play an hour, with Tyrique George on hand to replace him in the second half. Jamie Gittens and Estevao provide a dangerous pair out wide.

The likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez will likely travel and sit on the bench – Maresca simply can’t afford the risk of leaving them at home.

In other news…

Alejandro Garnacho will likely be rested tonight, but he’s overall made a good impression on Enzo Maresca. The competition for minutes is increasing, however, as injured players return.

Also mentioned in this interview was Garnacho’s extra sessions after training and how they’re impressing Chelsea coaches. You can read more about that here.
