Man United U21s break unwanted record with defeat to Anderlecht

PL News Tuesday 2 December 2025 - 21:58

Manchester United U21s lost 4-1 to RSC Anderlecht in the Premier League International Cup at Leigh Sports Village on Tuesday evening.

United were without Shea Lacey, who trained with the first team today ahead of their Premier League clash with West Ham United on Thursday.

Chido Obi and Sekou Kone were also absent from the matchday squad.

Travis Binnion’s side had beaten Athletic Club 2-1 in their opening game, but failed to build on that victory despite scoring first in this fixture.

Anderlecht began the game on the front foot and should have gone ahead in the 35th minute, but goalkeeper Will Murdock produced a big save to deny the visitors.

United drew the first blood just before the stroke of halftime, as Jacob Devaney headed Jack Fletcher’s pinpoint cross beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

Enzo Sternal restored parity for Anderlecht just after the restart, smashing the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Terry Van de Ven put the Belgian side ahead, capitalising on Devaney’s back pass to beat Murdock, despite Albert Mills blocking his initial effort.

Yasin Ozcan extended the visitors’ lead, beating Murdock at the near post with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Samuel Ntanda completed the scoring for Anderlecht, taking advantage of a United turnover to seal the victory for the Belgian side.

The result marked United’s heaviest loss in the competition.

United are back in action in the competition on December 19, when they host German side Borussia Dortmund.
