Chelsea transfer’s second PR disaster of the season could accelerate Stamford Bridge move

Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, who has a deal lined up to join Chelsea next summer, has been suspended for their game against Toulouse this week by his club after giving an international break interview where he jokes that he had signed for them thinking they were based in Germany.

Emegha puts his foot in it again

Emanuel Emegha’s mistake about Strasbourg.

It’s not ideal for Emegha, whose second season at the club should have been a glorious one but has turned into a bit of a PR disaster.

The announcement of his move to Chelsea a couple of months ago, complete with photos of him beaming with the blue shirt at Cobham, really frustrated the Strasbourg fans who were already sensitive about being seen just as a feeder team for Chelsea.

This has now compounded things further. According to Peter Rutzler, this is all to do with an international break interview back in his native Holland. We’re sure he didn’t mean anything by it, but a little bit of local historical knowledge and sensitivity would have gone a long way here. As captain, both of these incidents carry more weight than they might have done in other circumstances. Let’s hope this is all forgotten after his punishment is completed.

However, it’s another bit of weight added to the persistent idea that he might move his transfer forward to January, given how quickly bridges are being burned…

In other news…

There’s some dispute about whether Chelsea are in the title race this year or not. I mean, they definitely are now, but the question is whether they will be in May.

Chelsea have dropped so many points in recent years just when things are looking good – Enzo Maresca has talked this week about how he intends to give a message to stop that.
